The present volume is an attempt to clarify the place of the walled cities of Bohai within the context of similar urban areas throughout East Asia.
Part I is made up of an archeological examination of the Tang capital of Chang'an, Bohai's Shangjing and the Japanese capital city of Heijo (Nara), while Part II consists of a reexamination of material unearthed in the excavation of Shangjing (Dongjingcheng) by the Toa Archeological Society in 1933-34.
